About Rex

An Enduring Bond with Lancaster Where Community Comes Alive

Rex’s connection to Lancaster spans decades, born at Antelope Valley Hospital in 1956 and raised in poverty by a single mother, Rex attended local schools, played Little League on Saturdays, and found his first jobs at community businesses.

After needing to leave high school early to help provide family financial support, Rex persevered through night classes to graduate, never losing sight of the goal his mother had for her children to attain.

As a husband, father of four wonderful kids, business owner, and eventually the city’s mayor, Rex wove himself through the fabric of Lancaster over generations. He knows the rhythms of life in its neighborhoods, its core values, and the character of its people – because they are his rhythms, values and identity too.

Local Roots

Rex was born and raised in Lancaster. Growing up in poverty, he and his three brothers were raised by a single mother after their father abandoned the family. Rex dropped out of high school in the 10th grade to work in a local restaurant. He later attended Antelope Valley College at night.

Faith & Family

Rex and his wife Carrol are blessed with 4 children and 6 grandchildren. They are actively involved in working with Lancaster’s faith leaders.

A few years ago, Carrol received an incurable fibrotic lung disease diagnosis. Believing that with the grace of God, anything is possible, Rex talked to leading universities which were conducting advanced medical research in autoimmune and fibrotic diseases. He then gave them the money to bring their research out of the lab.

Fighter for Justice

Rex knows how unfair the legal system can be for many families. He built one of California’s most successful law practices here in Lancaster to help local residents fight back against big corporations and insurance companies.

Civil Rights Advocate

Rex has worked to empower local communities for greater representation in local elected offices and for greater diversity in city government. He is proud of having appointed Lancaster’s first African-American and Women Deputy Mayors.

Community Volunteer

Rex has given back to our community by donating millions of dollars to local charities, faith ministries, and non-profit community organizations. He donates his entire salary as Mayor to a Scholarship Fund that helps Lancaster students to attend college.
